It is quite obvious that the refs in this league are not trained properly to work the floor. Once again I am not saying the refs are bad, its just they make bad calls. And by bad calls I don’t mean simply that (although some do make obvious bad calls), the refs often make calls when they are not in the proper position to make the call. The go by what they think they see rather than what they actually see. You have refs at midcourt making calls under the basket and vice versa. Another problem is it appears that the refs work individually and not as a coehesive unit. One ref might make a call and another ref, often the one who is in the proper position, won’t discuss it with him to make the right call. It’s like they are afraid to make the right call to save face. Hey, people make mistakes. Even the best ref in the world makes plenty of mistakes, but by working as a unit, those mistakes can be lessened and the flow of the game can be more natural and accurate. That’s the benefit off having three refs. To see the entire court. I have played in leagues with two refs and the similarites in the bad calls in kind of sad to an extent.
Another thing that gets me is the explanations that they give us. I should have written all the lines that refs say when explaining why they make calls. It’s so clear that some really have no idea on certain facets of the game. Its like they were taught from the wrong manual of basketball.
I am really getting tired of the officiating. Now I’m not saying they are making bad calls. I’m saying for the most part, the refs aren’t prepared coming into a game. They should know who is playing, and already know ahead of time the intensity and how they are going to approach the game. If you are going to call a tight game then that’s fine, do that. It’s our job as players to feel out how the game is called and adjust. But when you allow the game to get physical and then start calling touch fouls, or vice versa, we as players are always at a dissadvantage. It is the job of a referee to officiate the game and dictate the flow of the game from the beginning, not change the course of the game. The problem with the refs in this league is not their ability to make calls, just the inconsistency of calls being made. With the exception of one ref who is just absolutely horrible. (he is young) Also the whole intentional foul thing is just ridiculous. But thats not just in Germany, that’s everywhere in Europe. I think it is a call that is being abused.
