Russian flair has been a theme already of regular season Week 1 as an old standby from that country provided new thrills on Wednesday and a new team from the same region matched the fun on Thursday. That newcomer, BC Khimki, topped mighty Real Madrid 84-81 in overtime in its first-ever Euroleague game. Carlos Cabezas came off the bench for 20 points to lead the winners. The night before, when four out of six road teams won, the fun also came in the first game completed as CSKA Moscow topped Maroussi 65-66 in Athens on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Victor Khryapa. After that, several favorites won going away and several players made their Euroleague debuts memorable. One was Linas Kleiza, who put up 23 points as Olympiacos downed Orleans 94-72. Read More
Regular Season Week 1 MVP, Darjus Lavrinovic, Real Madrid
He's probably the first person in pro basketball history who needed to beat a twin brother to win an honor, but Real Madrid center Darjus Lavrinovic nonetheless became the Euroleague's regular season Week 1 MVP by racking up a performance index rating of 49, the sixth-best total all decade! Despite his huge numbers, however, Lavrinovic and Madrid suffered a tough 84-81 overtime loss on the road against BC Khimki. Lavrinovic so dominated on the offensive end that Khimki's defenders sent him to the foul line 17 where he made them pay by hitting on 14-of-17 tries. Lavrinovic went 6-for-10 from two-point range and 2-for-2 from deep to finish with 32 points on the night in addition to 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks and an amazing 11 fouls drawn. Most amazing of all, however, was that Darjus had to do all that just to beat his twin brother, center Ksistof Lavrinovic of Montepaschi Siena, whose index rating of 34 made him the week's MVP runner-up thanks to an almost immaculate offensive performance in his team's 40-85 demolition of Cibona on the road in Zagreb. Fan Mail, Chuck Eidson, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv
One of the most versatile players in the world, Chuck Eidson, will make his Euroleague return on Thursday in a different uniform, the famous yellow of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, which hosts Union Olimpija in the 2009-10 regular season opening game in Group C. A sold-out Nokia Arena will be full of 11,000 fans who know that Eidson is a unique talent who can range from point forward to post-up expert and every role in between. They also hope for him to be a leader for a Maccabi team striving to return to its mid-decade heights in the Euroleague. For those Maccabi fans, and many others he has around the continent, Eidson has good news in his Fan Mail answers: he's not only able, but ready and willing to help Maccabi make magic. "You want to play the highest possible level as you can," Eidson said in one answer "I don't think there's any place higher than Maccabi, so obviously it's a great feeling and I'm very grateful for it... We'll get better as times goes by, but the potential to do great things is surely there."´ Read More
